Pathway to the Primary Series
Ashtanga Yoga is one
of the fastest growing styles of Yoga in the world today. It is a
challenging, dynamic, powerful practice that has the ability to
transform every aspect of your life. It is one of the most effective
forms of self improvement that has ever been devised with roots
dating back to 8000BC with evidence of this written in the Vedas,
the first written documents of mankind.
No other style of
exercise system offers strength, alignment, stamina, endurance,
flexibility as well as a calm and focused mind, without the use of
any equipment – not even shoes. The health benefits of Ashtanga Yoga
and its ability to prevent disease is only now being taken seriously
by western science.
There are six levels
in the practice of Ashtanga Yoga, the Primary Series being the
first. This systematic sequence of postures and movement is called
‘Yoga Chikitsa’ which means ‘Yoga Therapy’ in Sanskrit. The postures
flow into each other on the breath through a graceful movement
called ‘Vinyasa’.
Tremendous internal heat is built up by a
remarkable breathing technique called ‘Ujjayi Pranayama’ developing
a purifying and detoxifying sweat. This enables a connection to the
core of the body by the engagement of ‘bandahs’ or ‘energy locks’
creating lightness and effortless movement. This heat enables a
safer and more effective practice as it loosens up all the joints
and muscles. Concentration and patience are learned and required to
allow these benefits to emerge.
The practice comes
together over time, and as everybody is different modifications are
learned and progress comes with regularity.
The Pathway to the
Primary is a five level progressive system that leads to the full
Primary Series. Level 1 of the Pathway to the Primary is an
introductory course of ten lessons dealing with the fundamentals and
foundations of Ashtanga Yoga. The student learns how to apply what
is taught in class to begin their own home practice with safety and
confidence. This approach allows everyone to move through the
practice together.
It can be very
intimidating to begin Ashtanga Yoga through a full Primary or even a
modified class without preparation. Pathway to the Primary is a fun,
enjoyable, safe and rewarding experience and a way to begin this
challenging sequence gently and smoothly allowing time to discover
this amazing practice.
Through this
traditional method, over time, the full Primary Series is mastered
and can be practiced alone or in Ashtanga Yoga studios throughout
the world.
